How do I connect a Canon Pixma MG5420 printer to new iPad

I have volunteered to help my 90 year old aunt setup her new iPad4 and Canon Pixma MG5420 printer and an old Airport Express! No computer! I got the iPad setup on the network, The printer keeps asking for me to press the WPA button on the router, the AirPort Express doesn't have any buttons. I found a manual way of setting up the printer, I set it to the same Apple Network ssid the iPad is set to, but the printer is now asking for the WEP hex Key Code (5, 10 or 26 digits i think it was). This Key Code was not displayed during the iPad setup, how do i get this Key Code?

How did you put it in the iPad to connect it?

Perhaps you should use the Airport Utility on the iPad to update and reset the AEX, change the security to WPA2, and then set up the printer again.

Well I just went through the first time set up on the iPad and it got to the point of where it was trying to make a network connection and it listed the available connection points around there and there was an Apple airport and so I selected the airport And it went through or crunched around a bit and then set it up and asked for a username and password which I entered but it doesn't give you back the keycode that it used! I tried to use the AirPort Utility on the iPad but it said that it was not compatible with the AirPort express, I expect its because its an old one! Do u know if there might be a firmware update that could be applied to it and update it to do WPA2 protocol? I am sure that this AirPort express was made before WPA existed. Cheers! The earliest 1st Generation AEX supported WPA2. You might want to reset the AEX and then go to Settings > WiFi and it should give you a setup option there. Or use a computer and download the earlier version of the Airport Utility.

The only reason I was persuing a WEP aproach was when I went to manual setup on the printer it asked for me to select a network ssid from the list of 2 it found and one was the Airport Express, it then asked for the Wep Key Code and said it was a Hex code of lengths 5, 10 and 26 characters...

The canon MG5420 in its normal setup I beleive is trying to setup WPA but it keeps asking for the WPA button on the router to be pressed, since there are no WPA button on the AirPort Express how would I put it into a setup mode... i think it would be all automatic after that!???

You can bypass the WPA button as this feature is not available. If you know the WEP keycode you can enter it but there is no way to find it on the AEX you would have to see if whoever set it up wrote it down somewhere.

OK, I will try this, I will bypass the step on the printer for the WPA button, I don't think I looked to see if it could be bypassed, and it should ask me for the WPA pass phrase which we should have... I don't think the 1st Gen AirPort Express had n protocol, i think it only did 802.11b,g...

No, you are right it does 802.11a,b,g and draft n!

I was thinking this was what the Airport Extreme was for. But, wow this is a dual band n!
