Actually, no. A power off and power on is a restart, otherwise known as "power cycling". Holding the home and sleep/wake buttons simultaneously is a reset.

A restart shuts everything down and then turns off the phone.

A reset interrupts power to the device temporarily, causing it to power off and power back on without shutting anything down.

1. 3rd party

2. Customer

3. Mistyped title, since it doesn't say "soft reset" anywhere else in the article. Especially since it seems they are referring to what you called a "hard reset" as a "soft reset".

One thing you may notice is that nowhere in Apple support articles does it say "soft reset" or "hard reset". This is because when it comes to engineering, those terms are not used. Not sure where they started being used, but the "official" terms are "restart" and "reset". Mainly because restarting the phone is not resetting the phone and resetting the phone is not restarting the phone.

It's mainly semantics, and I don't care either way what you use, but you should know that those aren't the proper terms.
