I can no longer view pdf files in Safari. How can I fix this? I use OSX 10.8.4 and Safari version 6.0.5
Please advise!

Open a Finder window.
From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins
Click Go.
If you see the AdobePDFViewer.plugin in the Internet Plug-Ins folder, drag it to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

Hi Carolyn. There was no AdobePDFViewer.plugin in my Internet plug-ins folder to trash. Problem still persists. What next?
Try emptying the Safari cache ...
Command + Option + E
Then quit and relaunch Safari to test.

Back up all data.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
/Library/Internet Plug-ins
In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.
Thanks Linc. Yes this worked. The new Acrobat does not show PDF's in Safari under Mountain Lion OSX. I heard this help from another source.
I removed the Acrobat plug-ins and that was all I needed to do. PDFs now automatically open in preview.

I am having this same issue with one particular website. I am running OS X El Capitan v. 10.11.1 with Safari v. 9.0.1. I am unable to view the files on www.guitarinstructor.com (which is a paid subscription site I paid for) which are apparently .pdf files. I contacted their Tech Support and they say this is Apples issue and they can't do anything about it. I tried your solution below and deleted pdf and Adobe files from my Library, but I am still unable to view the sheet music on this site. Can anyone help with this or did I just waste $100? Oh yeah I forgot. It did work until I updated to El Capitan 10.11.1.
