Downgrading from rMBP to cMBP?

I purchased a rMBP back in 2012 and started noticing dead pixels right away. Before I had a chance to take it to an Apple store, my friend dropped it and the hinge cracked. Apple refused to fix the dead pixels without paying $1100 which was understandable. I ended up selling it on eBay because the dead pixels were clustered in the centre and were obtrusive. Now I'm stuck deciding what to purchase now. I'm kind of turned off of the rMBP because of the issues with the display and I'm contemplating purchasing a high res baseline cMBP and adding RAM and an SSD myself. Will the updated rMBP that will come out later this year have the same display issues or will apple have fixed them? What should I do?

We aren't Apple, but if there are hardware problems with the MacBook Pro with Retina display, they should be fixed now.

I think that's the best decision. The non-Retina MacBook Pro has got a performance similar to the MacBook Pro with Retina display except for the flash storage (the non-Retina MacBook Pro has got a hard drive), and it's customizable (you can add memory and hard drive without voiding the warranty).

If you don't need the Mac now, wait if you want. If you need the Mac now, buy it. It's simple and that's what I tell users to do

Dead pixels can exist on any new display. They are not "fixable" if they are a manufacturing defect. They should be weeded out by quality control. See:

Your problem could have been resolved had it not been for your friend. Seems to me that you need a friend with better hands. I hope he paid you the money his butterfingers cost you.
