One key stopped working on my old keyboard after a spill (oops) so I bought a new keyboard from the Apple Store. After connecting it, when I type, for example, a number, it shows the number momentarily then switches to show a letter. For example 4 types the letter J.

Try doing 3-4 SMC and PRAM resets to see if that helps. Did you spill on any other part of the computer?
Since you purchased an Apple keyboard, call AppleCare as you are still under warranty. Keyboard may be defective.
did you set the keyboard up in the system settings? Could be it thinks it has a different keyboard or different language. Simplest things first
