Constant crashing and rebooting, Don't know what else to do...
I purchased a slot-loading indigo iMac G3 (400MHz) on eBay last week and haven't been able to get it to work since. The basic problem is that every app that I open, crashes within seconds usually, sometimes minutes. This is true for Safari, iTunes, iChat, Address Book, Dashboard, even Finder sometimes. Sometimes, the app will not even open before closing (it will bounce in the dock and then just disappear) Also, sometimes the "Please reboot your computer" grey box comes up. Usually, I cannot access error logs or reports because Finder crashes when I look at them for more than a second.
Here are the steps I have taken so far:
-upgrade OS from 10.0 to 10.4.3 (clean install...)
-reformat HD with disk utility and install Tiger again
-Take out individual RAM sticks to see if the RAM is bad (there are two sticks of RAM, a 256MB and a 64MB...neither of them were shipped by Apple originally, I guess, because on the bottom of the iMac it says 128 MB RAM.)
The only thing that seemed to work was the RAM swap...I took out the 64 MB stick first and everything worked for a few minutes, then went back to normal, so I guess it was just coincidence? After I put that back in and took out the 256 stick the system would not boot, it had the alternating Finder/Question mark folder flashing on the screen, so I put it back in.
I'm not sure what else to do but send it back to the seller of the auction. I already told him that his installation of 10.0 was screwy, so he said he would send an installation CD. But I'm quite sure that won't do anything.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
