I am using Boot Camp Windows 8. I have an external drive (firewire) which I have connected to my thunderbolt display. The thunderbolt display is connected to my rMBP. I am unable to see my external drive. Could someone please offer me some assistance?

Do you have a firewire drive (for Mac) that shows up when connected to TB display? If so then sounds like you are missing some driver for the Windows side of the system. Is the drive formatted for Windows?
The drive is formated for windows (NTFS). Using USB and plugging to thunderbolt display works. Do you know where I can download the correct driver? Do I need a thunderbolt driver?
I know it wasn't until recently that win8 was supported using boot camp. Only bootcamp V5 will work and should contain all required drivers. I always use Parallels now and Win7 (I hate Win8). I would look at the Apple support site for some additional info. using Win8 with boot camp.
