Q: Please Help

I bought a new ipad today, came home and connected it to my home computer to access the itunes store for kids apps.  Now the ipad will only show a USB cable with an arrow pointing to the itunes logo in the middle of the screen.  I have tried to restart and restore the ipad but receive the message "ipad software update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable."  I tried disconnecting the ipad from the computer but the screen does not change - it's still the itunes logo with the USB cable.  I have looked at the support suggestions and have tried them but nothing seems to work.  If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate hearing them as I'm at a loss and ready to toss the thing out the window...

Try restarting it while disconnected by holding the SLEEP/WAKE & HOME buttons until it shows the apple, ignoring the slider. If this doesn't work, try connecting to iTunes and doing a software update.

Don't give yourself an ulcer.  Take it back.

Your iPad is in recovery mode and the only way that it will come on is to restore it to get out of this mode. This is normal when you first get an iPad and pretty easy to get out of.

Make sure that iTunes is up to date

    1. Go to Help > Check for Updates in iTunes.

    2. If you don't see the Help menu, locate the small grey box in the very top left corner of iTunes and click it. Then click Show Menu Bar and the Help menu will appear

After you update iTunes, restart your computer, and then try to restore again. If that doesn't resolve your issue, try this article http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1814
