smcclay posted this follow the sleps,

You can find instructions on how to retrieve your baseband logs from here:

    https://developer.apple.com/bug-reporting/ios/baseband-iphone/

You will likely need to sign up as a developer. You shouldn't have to pay for a developer subscription though (I don't pay to be a developer).

If you can get the logs, you need to look for a section that looks like this:

"GSM SMS Point to Point PDU (as hex str):"

Once you have entered the initial numbers and rebooted your phone try to activate imessage. As soon as you do go to the phone dialer and input *5005*78283#. Select 'reply' and enter anything as a description (perhaps something like "imessage issue") and press reply in the upper right corner.

Now, connect your phone to your computer and sync it with itunes. The logs are now on your computer. To find them on a macbook they will be located here:

    ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/[Your_User_Name]/Baseband

To find them on windows they will be located here:

    Windows 8: C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\Logs\CrashReporter\MobileDevice\\

    Windows 7/Vista: C:\Users\[Your_User_Name]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\Logs\CrashReporter\MobileDevice\[Your_User_Name]\Baseband\

    Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[Your User Name]\Application Data\Apple Computer\Logs\CrashReporter\MobileDevice\\Baseband\

You need to navigate (using either finder/windows explorer or terminal/cmd) to this location and find the most recent log.

All of these instructions are available here: https://developer.apple.com/bug-reporting/ios/baseband-iphone/

After doing a sync with iTunes, hold down the option key and click the 'Go' Menu in the Finder and choose 'Library'. From there you should be able to find Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/YourDeviceNameHere. In this directory you should be able to find the correct log file. I used TextWranger (free from the App store) to search multiple files for the number '447786205094'. It is very important to find the newest one. You need the 'GSM SMS Point to Point PDU (as hex str):' just above the phone number in the log.

Apologies. Spelling error. The app is TextWrangler and it is available in the Mac App store.

If people don't mind, I would like to clarify please, because the thread is long and technical enough that it's easy to get lost.

I understand from the successful response that because of the ingenious persistence of one of the people here, (smclay?), we now know how to activate iMessage on wind, and that several people have done it.  Excellent!

My confusion:  I thought it involved both some text and config and log file acrobatics AND an older piece of hardware to send a specific command.  I'm confused because much follow-up has been about the log file acrobatics, which I have just assumed any of us can do if we read carefully and put in the time.

But... Even if we do, aren't we still SOL without that specific piece of hardware? Are the people  struggling with doing all this log file hexxing all in possession of an old gsm-modem type phone? (I'm assuming the iPhone doesn't have one.)

If not, is it because this is now possible to accomplish without a gsm modem?

Or if not, is somebody being a Good Samaritan for the moment?

    Many thanks for the clarification.
