Can not restore iPod Touch- Unknown Error 1646

My iPod has been acting up for about a month now. It keeps telling me to restore the iPod which I have done several times. The problem is when I do run a restore it tells me "The iPod "iPod" could not be restored. An unknown error occured (1646)." Each time I run a restore, the iPod begins working "better" but not great. It will work for a few days, maybe a week then it will go unresponsive again & I have to repeat the process all over again. Any suggestions?

Actually it has not been jailbroken. I have no idea how to do that. I did realize after fighting with trying to restore it several times that it would give me other error codes as well. I tried it again tonight and received error code 3004. The research I did on past codes seem to have something to do with my security software but after several failed attempts to "fix" the security issues, I gave up.

Errors 3000-3999 (3004, 3013, 3018, 3164, 3194, and so on): Error codes in the 3000 range generally mean that iTunes cannot contact the update server (gs.apple.com) on ports 80 or 443.

  1. Update to the latest version of iTunes.
  2. Verify the computer's date and time are accurate.
  3. Check that your security or firewall software is not interfering with ports 80 or 443, or with the server gs.apple.com.
  4. Follow Troubleshooting security software. Often, uninstalling third-party security software will resolve these errors.
  5. An entry in your hosts file may be redirecting requests to gs.apple.com (see "Unable to contact the iOS software update server gs.apple.com" above).
  6. Internet proxy settings can cause this issue. If you are using a proxy, try without using one.
  7. Test restoring while connected to a known-good network.

Error 3004: If you are using a Mac, you may be able to resolve an error 3004 by quitting iTunes and using the following command at the command line: dscacheutil -flushcache
