lost photos

how do i restore my photo library .... some of my photos only have the thumbnail visible and display a question mark .... HELP !!!

MacBook Pro, iOS 6.1.4

If you backed it up to photo stream or iTunes you can get it back if not i don't know

what version of iPhoto and of the OS?

backup your iPhoto library, depress the option and command keys, launch iPhoto and rebuild the database
