Logic Pro X - How do I Record the built in sequencer MIDI of the Drum Machine Instrument

I'd like to use the drum pattern from one of the Drum Machine presets as a starting point for a pattern I'd like to develop further. I can hear the pattern when I press the play button on the sequencer but when I enable the track to record and hit record, nothing records. Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks!

If you are looking to record and edit the pattern from the Ultarbeat sequencer, you will notice a small gray button in the lower left corner next to the word "Pattern". By clicking and draging from this point into the arrange window, you will create a midi region with the pattern info to then manipulate any way you see fit. The region will also hold any parameter information you automate in the ultarbeat sequencer as well.

This is how it worked in LPro 9 and I have yet to use LPX but I have seen no info regarding a change in this behavior. Hope this answers your question...

Thanks folks, but I'm referrning to the Drum Machine instrument in the default Electronic template (inserted into the first and eight track (top right of screen shot). It doesnt seem to work like Ultrabeat with respect to patterns (and I havent given the new drummers a try yet to see if that would offer a clue). I still can't seem to get a recorded region from with the play button engaged in the Sequencer section (bottom right of screen shot).User uploaded file

Follow the recommendations above: click on the arrow and unpack the stack with the various drum hits in it; in the kick's instrument slot (or whichever drum is the first in the column) in its channel strip you'll see an instance of Ultrabeat - open this up and drag an drop the midi pattern (there is a small 'pattern' icon bottom left of Ultrabeat for this) and drop it into the arrange window in the parent track of the stack and then you can change the midi as required. If you wanted to take it a step further and have midi for each drum pattern you could either copy and paste the midi region into each drum's track and delete the un-needed midi in each instance from the region, or you could do multiple drag and drops from Ultrabeat into each drum's arrange track but click solo on Ultrabeat for each specific drum in turn as you do so.

The other method, as above is good too, but you'll have an audio file rather than midi at the end: route the output of the drum machine parent stack track to any buss, set up an audio track and set the input of this to whichever buss you chose in the step before, set the locator to the start of the pattern and hit Record: the audio of the pattern will now record into this audio track.

I have the exact same problem as you and am unable to record the sequencer's default loop. As to what skijumptoes was saying, all that does is show you what layers make up the instrument/track, and in no way allows you to record the loop it provides when you press the play button in the bottom right of your screenshot. Please please please someone help out on this as the future of the song I'm producing depends on this! 😮

If I'm understanding what you want to do here's what you need to do:

You have to create 2 tracks in Logic.

1st track needs to be an Instrument Track.

2nd track needs to be an Audio Track.

Set up ultrabeat in the instrument track and route it to the Audio track and record that.

The way you could do this is where it says output on track 1 click this and route that to

Bus1 and then in track 2 (the Audio track) make your input to be bus 1. then you can hit Record

on the Audio Track while Ultrbeat is playing and you have a recording of what you've

done in Ultrabeat...

And the reason you have to jump through these hoops is... neither the Audio or MIDI engine in Logic-X is changed from Logic-9, and the biggie... Apple seems to have stopped development of their AU protocol, meanwhile the VST format has undergone two major upgrades, as of three years ago you could select any VST instrument that has MIDI output and use it as an Input device (like a keyboard) on a MIDI track, hit record and the output of the device is recorded. Then use the same instrument as an input device while you edit the MIDI track it just created.

Supposedly the AU format contains the hooks to do this, unfortunately Logic's MIDI implementation would have to be rewritten so any MIDI track could have individual devices selected as Input/Output.

Logic-X's 4 year re-write is mainly about Interface/Workflow issues, a few new features (Stacks) but mainly improvements and different ways of looking at what was already there. (not a bad thing) The underlying Audio/MIDI engine seems unchanged from Logic 9. And after 4 years, that's kind of a shame. X is definitely aimed at upgrading Garageband users.
