volume down key doesn't work

so the volume down key on my mac wireless keyboard stopped working all of a sudden and now randomly i will be using the mac (or not using it) and the volume will get turned right down to completely off.

running mac os x 10.6.8

is this a os x type bug or an issue with the keyboard itself?
