Restoring full system backup, TM to Snow Leopard

Have replaced hard drive in desktop iMac, reinstalled OX 10.6.8, iLife and iWork - all updated. Unable to do full system restore from an earlier date on Time Machine, backed up on same computer. Apple Support suggests using Disk Utility, Restore tab. Can drag TM into the Source box but cannot drag the hard drive into the destination box. Another method suggests using Command R keys when starting, but this seems applicable to Lion only.

Would appreciate guidance on this system restore, other than individual restore.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.6), Canon Scanner, Canon printer

If you are trying to do full restore, you should boot off the Snow Leopard OS X installer disc. Otherwise you can use Migration Assistant and it will recognize the TM backup.
