Connect iMac to Acer Monitor using DVI

I am going to buy an Acer monitor (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Acer-H226HQLbmid-21-5-Widescreen-Monitor/dp/B00B07RA6E/r ef=sr_1_4?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1373627515&sr=1-4&keywords=monitors+21.5%22+hd mi) and connect it to my 21.5" Late 2011 iMac as a dual monitor. I wish to connect it using DVI as I will be using the HDMI port for my game console.

I have heard problems connecting with DVI, such as the monitor not being recognised and the difference between make and female DVI adapters. I want to know if Apple's adapter will work without problems before buying another adapter so that I do not waste any money

Thanks in advance

iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2011), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3)
