Q: Why is the Apple Mac Developer portal down, and for how long?

I cannot access the Mac Developer resources this morning.

With a company as advannced as Apple, I would expect them to be able to roll out web updates

seamlessly.

I don't like being out in the cold.

I want to download the Mavericks Beta.

True. It might have been nice if they said something a bit earlier about a security breach. Rebuilding a db, as large as theirs is not a small task. One wonders why they have to overhaul everything.

The Sh1t would of hit the fan if they let the cat out of the bag for the weekend news.

Monday is a slow news day, and they let it out of the bag, 630 AWST so NO chance of making any paper what so ever, but that cant be said, for those Papers in the US . . . . Ruperts writer will be on it already for tomorrows papers

I wish Mr. Cook would double down on security rather than secrecy.

Is anybody know, when apple developer resorces will be available? may be some prognosis? It should not take so long time, I hope that it will not take for a week...

After re-reading the recent announcement, I get an odd feeling about it. The scope of Apple's response seems orders of magnitude larger than I would expect for an intrusion detection. I don't know if we will ever get a adequate explanation about what happened. The need for secrecy and to save face gets in the way of disclosure.

Finding the breach hole is probably first priority as they will have to prevent it from being used again once its up... One week, four? From my experience (in another large US company), professional spies try to get in all the time. So they may also have entered a site physically to get access.

Alternately they will have to trust that updated software is enough for now and rebuild the whole site. Updating server software should be quick enough (2-3 days?). It will also remove any trojans and reset all the passwords.

Once the site is up, everyone will have to get new app certificates. Its not so difficult, but they will have to find a controlled way of distributing them. 5 million logins at once won't work..

I won't be surprised if the iOS7 release will happen sooner due to this.

Apple doesn't seem to tell us everything that happened. In fact, they seem to tell us almost nothing.

I've been an IT professional for many years, and still I have no clue as to what "secure personal information of our registered developers" means. If it were just a matter of exposing developers' names, mailing addresses and email addresses, they should have been able to block it in a matter of hours, not days (or weeks?), and it definitely shouldn't require them to "rebuild our entire database".

Developers' accounts seem to be intact. You can still login to iTunes Connect and do uploads in Xcode. Even if they use different databases, and even if the developers' site database is down, again it shouldn't take days to reconstruct it from another database. And I doubt if that's the case, because it seems that they use some single login scheme.

Apple seems to forget that we PAY for the service. As paying customers, we can expect a detailed and honest explanation and a time frame that goes beyond (the redefinition of the term) "soon". And as a side note, they should extend the registration period for everyone, not just for developers whose membership was set to expire during the outage period.

Yeah... but so big corporation as Apple should care of their team - all developers who paid 100 dollars is their team, and I do not believe that Apple servers or something can be damaged by somebody as Apple has the best engieneers and stuff who can provide stablish resources.

I think it can be Marketing operation - publishing iOS 7 beta 4  with new developer resource(may be)

I am new developer on this place - and nevertheless I would like to pay 100 dollars to join developers command, I hope that Apple is the best provider of novation and it will be in first top between that people who like good things.

So, I'll wait and pray for this resource...

I found infromation on the portal URL: http://www.macdigger.ru/ it is on Russian Language but I can explain what said there... there is information that somebody Ibrahim Ballik (British Expert of information security department) found the vulnerability on the developers portal and reported about it. You can see the translation of this page by going http://translate.google.kz/translate?hl=ru&sl=ru&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.macdig ger.ru%2Fmacall%2Fekspert-preduprezhdal-apple-ob-uyazvimostyax-na-sajte.html

    There is also video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q000_EOWy80

And I hope that Apple will be soon back - when they will fix all bugs...

    On a lighter note

Do you think it hasn't been fixed because everyone was at comic con?

That is just an artifact of the Jive software that runs this site. There is no "branched discussion". This is it. There is no other.

Whenever the dev centers come back, I'd expect Apple to force devs to change their password(s) first thing. The process should be straightforward and for anyone wishing to act now, please see this User Tip:

How To Change Your Apple ID/Password(s)
