Q: Why is the Apple Mac Developer portal down, and for how long?

I cannot access the Mac Developer resources this morning.

With a company as advannced as Apple, I would expect them to be able to roll out web updates

seamlessly.

I don't like being out in the cold.

I want to download the Mavericks Beta.

may b the reason behind this is to get some extra hits for their discussion forum.

I agree.  I am trying to put together a demo at a new company, and need to finish enabling push for a demo.  Demo has to be delayed because of the outage.  This is something I would expect from RIM, not Apple.

This could be all my fault. Yesterday I went to an Apple Store and paid cash for a brand new top of the line MBP (and all the accessories). Maybe that pushed them over their revenue target for the month and they decided to shut down and go on vacation.:-)   (it was an impressive pile of cash)

Apple most certainly would have made an announcement if they knew it would have taken this long.  I suspect the "maintenance" is in anticipation of releasing iOS 7 beta 4 on Monday which includes some new developer backend services/infrastructure.   Something likely didn't go as planned before they went live.   I am sure they are working extremely hard and long hours to remedy the problem.   What ever the problem is, I am actually encouraged that Apple caught it before going live.

Man I hear that, but. Or and, they created this market, might be an argument, but again, by now I might suggest they could have a more appeasing "whats up message", to let us know how to plan our growth, and of course theirs as well. Just hold it together Apple.

I wouldn't mind the extended downtime if they would just REPLACE THE FORUM SOFTWARE.

Ever tried pasting code into a reply?

    Double spaced every time.

Ever tried searching over there? I start wishing it ran as well as this forum does.

    Searching?  I forgot about that.

When it doesn't find any results, the suggested search terms are hilarious.

Why not take this opportunity to say what you'd accept in return for the backend being offline this long...

    - Proper dev forum moderation that encourages actual dev related conversation, rather than constant beta complaints from non-devs?

    - Reliable dev forum software with sensible search capability?

    - Increased engineer participation that reflects the fee involved?

    - Consistent tools that support stable provisioning etc. that don't constantly change or become unavailable?

    - ...?

I doubt very many Apple staff are on break during the summer. The summer is when Apple releases (or does major testing) of their flagship software (and sometimes hardware too). The people who aren't on break are the ones working on iOS, OS X, and the Dev portal (ESP. Documentation). I doubt many are on break. The big break is during the winter holiday when iTC shuts down from about December 20-30.

I agree here with K T! If the Dev portal is going to be down for a few days they better have some amazing changes or a butt load of more documentation for the new APIs. I'd love to see these things:

    - Reliable dev forum software with sensible search capability

    - Increased engineer participation that reflects the fee involved

    - Consistent tools that support stable provisioning etc. that don't constantly change or become unavailable

However, on the last point, Xcode 5 helps to begin solving that problem.

Just keeping my fingers crossed is more than just a server messup. Hopefully the forums and Dev portal will be much improved.

Also, anyone noticed that Apple hasn't gotten rid of the ugly linen background on the maintenance page? When do you think that'll disappear?

Note that iTC is still up, and this seems to be an unplanned event, so....there are at least three different groups involved, and the one in discussion here (those from Apple that can pressure the vendor to earn their keep dealing with an unplanned outage) are snorkeling in the Bahamas. s u x to be anyone else right now, but hey - snorkeling...

If you're just now joining us... the dev portal has been down for close to 48 hours now. Apple refuses to give us any details as to what's going on :/
