I'm on 10.8.4 and my mic is not recognised when my in-ear headphones are plugged in

This support document claims the problem was resolved. For me, it is not. Any leads?

MacBook Pro (15-inch Late 2008), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4), 4GB RAM 2.53Ghz
