Q: Changing Apple ID - Currently sharing one, but need to split into two

My wife and I currently share the same Apple ID;  however, she has her iPhone synced with the iTunes on her laptop and I have my iPhone synced with my iTunes on my separate laptop.  The problem, of course, is that if we both use the cloud, all our info gets shared/synced together, which we don't want to do.

Is there a way for her to keep her current ID (so she doesn't have to change anything), but for me to change mine and keep access to all my apps, music, etc., in my iTunes library and on my iPhone?  My understanding (which may be incorrect), is that if I change my Apple ID associated with my iPhone and iTunes (and all associated apps, music, etc.), that I may not get access to those any longer.  Also, if I change the Apple ID associated with my iPhone/iTunes, I still want my wife to keep the same one we've been using.

Any tips or solutions appreciated?  Apologies if this has been covered many times in the past.

You can share apple id for apps and music, but what you need to do is create a new apple id for your icloud account.

You can continue to use apps and music purchased with a different ID if you get a new Apple ID. The only downside is when you update the apps you will need the password for the Apple ID the content was purchased with.

It's encouraging when you get two responses to a question, and they agree

My wife and I also shared an Apple ID, but I have since created my own. Her Contacts were updated with mine when I sync with icloud. Is there an easy way for me to remove my contacts from her phone?

Our children each have iPod Touches with their own Apple ID for iCloud/Find my iPhone and use mine for iTunes Music & Apps.  Each time an App needs updating they are asked for my password (the one associated with the purchased App).  Is there a way to avoid this so that they don't have to keep asking me to enter the password?  They are still young and I prefer they not have access to my Apple ID's password.  I do want it to require my password for buying a new App but surely for an update it ought to be able to do that as it does on my own iPhone, without the need to enter the password.  Is this simply because my iPhone uses the same Apple ID/password combination throughout and their devices do not?

Yes, that's the reason. An app is associated with the Apple ID it was purchased with forever. So if the Apple ID the phone is logged into isn't the same Apple ID associated with the app when the app is updated a password is required.

Is it possible to use one Apple ID for mail/messages/facetime yet have the device is "logged in" to my Apple ID that "owns" the purchased Apps?

Yes. The Apple IDs for facetime and imessage are separate from the one for the Stores. So you can go to settings/iTunes&app stores, log out, then log in with the purchase Apple ID. Do the same for settings/messages and settings/facetime, using a different Apple ID that is only used for these functions.

You can also choose a different Apple ID for iCloud, which will be the official one for Find my iPhone.

I've been reading for hours & am only more confused. I hope someone can help me sort it all out!

First, I have a new iPhone 5s & new SIM card. I backed up my iPhone 4s & restored the info on the 5s.

My husband lost his iPhone & is taking over my iPhone 4s. He was sent a new SIM card.

I do not know how to set up the 4s phone for him & need advice!

Correct me if this is wrong, but we can have the same Apple ID--this will enable him access to all music & apps purchases? On the iphone 4s I changed to his email address & left my Apple ID for itunes & apps. When I tried to change the iCloud ID, it would not take it. Also when I tried to change the iMessage ID a message came up that if I deleted mine, I would not be able to receive iMessages on any device & I also have an iPad).

Would someone please tell me, in simple terms, the best way to set up my iPhone 4S so that my husband can have his own Mail, contacts, messages, etc & still be able to have access to my apps?.

I greatly appreciate any help I can get!

Settings > iTunes and App store  = Share the same Apple ID account signed in

For everything else = Have your own apple id (Seperate )

    Examples : SEttings > Facetime

    Settings > Messages

    AND MOST IMPORTANT

    Settings > iCloud

Thanks, but how do I establish separate accounts for "everything else"? When I tried to do it on the 4s, I was not able to change from mine to my husband's. Thx!

When asking to activate an iphone in 'simple terms' that is not an easy task. What I would ask of you would be to click on this link which will then give you valuable information on the tast at hand.

    Good luck.

Thanks, but I've read all that & set up my 5s. What I cannot see to be able to do is keep the same Apple ID fo itunes/apps & set up a different iCloud account so our contacts, etc won't converge.
