constant desktop flashes fix?

i've recently started to notice that everytime i'm using chrome, safari, itunes or any other program i constantly get quick flashes of the desktop. when something loads it somehow glitches and it shows the desktop for a second and it's quite bothersome. can anyone tell me what is going on with the glitches?
