The error -1 is usually a hardware error and the iPod needs to be serviced.

You need to first purchase the update to iOS 3 in the iTunes Store and install it and then you can update to iOS 4.2.1.

deggie, there is no reason to purchase 3.1.3 for the 2G. The purchase only applied to the 1G.

Are you sure you really do not have a 1G? If your iPod does not have volume buttons on the upper left edge it is a 1G
