If your ID is showing up on your son's phone, you either used your own ID to buy those apps for him, or you set up the phone with your ID. If the apps were purchased with your ID, he has to continue to use your ID and password to update the apps since they will always be tied to your ID.
If he needs to sign into his own ID, he can do that in Settings>iTunes and App Stores>Apple ID. Tap your ID and sign out, and sign in with his own ID.
Maybe you should make sure that you are using the correct ID on your iPad. Perhaps that why you cannot log into iTunes.
