When do I charge my brand new iPhone 5?

Hi guys, I got my new iPhone 5 today. I'm abit confused on the best way to do this.

It has come with about 60-70% battery. Do I fully charge it before putting my sim in and connecting to iTunes to set it up. Or do I leave it with the battery life it has and let it run down fully before charging!? Any help would be really appreciated :-)

So with its 60-70% battery it's fine to use right away and set up etc etc and then fully charge it once its died?

Yes, but try to minimize deep discharges. You can and should charge as often and as long as possible... deep discharges are hard on lithium batteries. Normal mobile use will result in the one charge cycle/month that Apple recommends.

Kind of comparing Apple adn Oranges here (no pun intended).

For your initial set up, 60% charge will be just fine. Plug it in set up , and you're good to go. No need to charge it first.

Some of the other posts are about onging battery care - what to do after set up as yo use it. Give them a read, but to be honest, I've owned 7 or 8 iOS devices over the years and basically I follow two rules:

  • Every once in a while, I let the device go down to less the 10% (I shoot for once a month, but don't really keep track). This helps keep the battery metter calibrated.
  • If it needs to be charge, I charge it.

Beyond that, I've never gone into any detailed process or given it much thought. And have never seen a battery issue. They seriously are not that fragile.

You're welcome Tasha. Deep discharges mean running the battery down to near 0%, i.e. 5% or 10%. You can take it out of the box, set it up and use it.. don't worry about charging to 100% the first time. Then just use it and charge it when you can. Lithium batteries and charging systems on modern devices are designed to be user friendly, i.e. just charge it when you can, as often as you can. Most likely the battery will last longer than you will use the device. Enjoy your new iP5. 😉

The only thing I don't get is I have loads of albums and songs on my phone, I sync to iTunes only 24 will show! It won't sync all the others to my iTunes account. They used to be on there before the ios6.1.3 update. After tht update I had to manually download each and every one com purchase history on iTunes on my phone. None of which will show on my laptop on the iTunes account.

In order for your battery to be most effective you should charge it fully before first using (it even tells you that in the instructions), then let it drain all the way down through normal use before charging again. Do not charge mid-way or it could affect your battery life. Today's batteries are built better but it is still important to follow this guidance.

This is incorrect.

The ONLY reason to drain it fully then recharge it fully once a month is to keep the battery meter somewhat calibrated.

Charging it when it is half drained will not affect the battery in any way at all

Kinda backfired on that, eh? 😉

When you first get your phone you want to charge it completely for best results. Then you can let it go down but not completely after that completely charge again. Then you can charge it at any time. At least once a month completely charge it!

See for yourself! Go to the apple website: http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html

Yes your comment backfired on you. But don't worry I won't hold it against you that is why I am your mentor...AKA The Wise One but you can call me The Wise One! 😁
