Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can use a 27-inch iMac or an iMac with Thunderbolt as an external display for other Macs. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
In the case of iMacs with Thunderbolt (Mid 2011 and Late 2012 iMacs), both 21'5 and 27-inch iMacs can be used as an external display, but in the case of Late 2009 and Mid 2010 iMacs, only the 27-inch iMac can be used as an external display. Follow the steps of the page above in order to use the iMac as an external display.
If you have got a non-supported iMac, you can still use your iMac as an external display with an application like ScreenRecycler, which uses the network to share your iMac screen with the MacBook Pro
Thanks for your response. Looks like my iMac is 24-inch early 2008. Will ScreenRecycler work? Will I be able to use the iMac keyboard to update the program on my MacBook Pro?
ScreenRecycler will work > http://www.screenrecycler.com/ScreenRecycler.html
Unfortunately, you can't use the iMac keyboard with the MacBook Pro. In this case, you will have to connect (or pair, if it's a Bluetooth keyboard) the iMac keyboard to the MacBook Pro
