How to create a boot drive with disk utility

For reasons that would take too long to explain, I've installed a new HD on my Mac Pro and want to make it my startup disk with my original 10.4.x software. I thought I had formated the disk but apparently not since my original startup disk's disk utility can't see the new HD. I've done this before but can't remember, isn't there something special that needs to be done in disk utility, other than erase and format the new HD, that puts some sort of code on the disk that lets the system see it?

No, it shouldn't, but I think 10.4.11 was the first OS to recognize the new 4K Advanced Format discs for ine thing, & 10.4.6 or .7 was the latest 10.4 Install Disc I believe.

Is the new drive SATA speed compatible with your Mac Pro's SATA speed?

Do you have an external drive you can Install to for now?
