Hard drive on macbook pro 13' needs to be replaced, any suggestions on which one as per today? mine was since 2009.

Hello

i was told my HD needs to be replaced as it is damaged (no exact explanation here from Apple but nevermind)....so is there a specific HD to avoid to be installed? i bought my mac in october 2009. Thank you for the advice.

YES, avoid ANY Western digital drive. Apple uses Hitachi or Toshiba (made by Hitachi) drives, which are the best. Today, there are ONLY 3 makers of conventional Hard Drives.

get a Toshiba (made by Hitachi) or Hitachi 1TB HD, a 1TB drive is only about $70 now even in retail. you CANNOT INSTALL a 1.5 TB drive, because thickness is 12.5mm thick

A macbook CANNOT accept anything thicker than a 9.5mm HD. (=1TB max)

7mm = 500GB max

9.5mm = 500GB or 750GB, or 1TB

12.5mm = 1.5TB

15.2mm = 2TB

I agree with PlotinusVeritas concerning Western Digital drives - I've had them and had nothing but problems.

You don't say how much disk space you actually WANT - is there anything that you have in mind?

Although a 2009 model wouldn't benefit from a SATA III hard drive, you'll want to look at 7200rpm drives (but if you DO get a SATA III drive, it will be backward compatible with your SATA II interface).

I have four of these - love them. If you feel as if you could use a 1TB drive, it's the one that I would recommend. Love HGST, Hitachi in general, Seagate. But not WD.

Thank you both, really useful info.My mac is for now 250 gb 5400rpm. I have to say this 250gb is enough for me.

I was offered as below for replacing the hard drive.

Would be Samsung a good option? hybrid one? for sure I take note no Western. And I would go indeed for 7200 rpm as suggested by you too.

New hard drives starting with the most expensive:

SSD hard drive instead of regular winchester:

120 GB Samsung SSD meghajtó 28 000Ft +afa
250 GB Samsung SSD meghajtó 42 000Ft +áfa
- winchesterek:

320GB 5400rpm winchester 20 000Ft+áfa
500GB 5400rpm winchester 22 000Ft+áfa
1000GB 5400rpm winchester 27 000Ft+áfa

Faster winchesters with 7200 rpm ( a bit quicker than 5400rpm):

320GB 7200rpm winchester 24 000Ft+áfa
500GB 7200rpm winchester 26 000Ft+áfa

* Hybrid Winchester:

It includes a 500 GB Winchester and a 8 GB SSD hard drive (hence hybrid ), combines the speed of SSD and the speed of the Winchester (it takes cca 30 sec to start the laptop instead of 90 seconds):

500GB 7200rpm winchester +8GB SSD 34 000Ft+áfa

Also since my date needs to be saved/recovered by data saving company, I was suggested to bring an external HD.

Any suggestion on external HD to buy? or not to buy? then at least i will have a copy before getting new hard drive for my mac.

Thank you

That is not the case. Some more recent MBPs will accept a 12.5 mm thick HDD. That is the information that I received from the OWC technical staff regarding my specific MBPs. If one contacts them regarding thier own specific MBP, then one may be able to opt installing a 1.5 YB HDD.

Ciao.

I have 3 of those drives already, and 2 of the 500GB versions. I also have 2 Savvio 15,000rpm spinners in an external JBOD box.

They were a little more than $99.99 I admit but Seagate just released a 1TB hybrid that is $99.99 (another poster just bought some)

The Savvio's are small (64GB) fast and were absurdly expensive back in 07 🙂

I had 1 of them in a Mac Pro for a while, it was really noisy and got hot, so the drive ended up 'out of the box' They're still fast (105Mb/s sustained) but too small and too loud.

And the Seagate XT pushes data at the same rate (a little higher) with less latency (when the data is in the Flash) or more latency (when it is not)

The Savvio's sound like a Phantom on a carrier launch, not so far away.

Hard drive on macbook pro 13' needs to be replaced, any suggestions on which one as per today? mine was since 2009.
