i have disabled my thompson wireless router TG782T and connected my time capsule to this via ethernet

how do i get the time machine to transmit a wireless signal?

do i have to reset unit?

will i lose all my backed up data?

i also want to connect an airport express to extend coverage ( i can connect this via ethernet or wi fi)

I am going to need a bit more info..

What OS are you running on the computer you are using for the setup and what airport utility??

When you say you disabled the Thomson wireless router.. do you mean you bridged it? Or just turned off wireless?

There are two scenarios.. each are pretty well equal..

Turn off wireless in the TG782T and run the Time Capsule (Time Machine is backup software on the computer). in bridge mode with create a wireless network.

Or bridge the TG782T and run pppoe client in the TC.. which will also create a wireless network..

    Either scenario will be fine.

You do not have to reset the TC .. just set it in correct mode via the airport utility.

Even if you reset the unit.. you will not lose any data backed up on the hard disk.

An express can extend the wireless or use roaming network.. again either are possible setups.

Roaming is much faster but you need to run ethernet to the express. Otherwise setup extend wireless.. just use the instructions. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4259

    Roaming instructions are here.

thank you very much for your assistance.

    I have it all working.

Are you familiar with time capsule overheating problems? it feels ok(the rubber mat underneath is not too hot)

but the fan runs 24/7 and the yellow light flashes. Not a serene environment in which to study.

I suspect I will have to purchase an airport extreme to replace the time capsule and provide a silent transmitter and investigage other storage/backup options....

    any advice would be fantastic.

Depending on the age of the TC.. heat problem will build up in the top.

The mat on the bottom blocks air access.

You can do all sorts of things to fix it. Including turning on the fan.

Or changing to an external power supply.

If you don't want any noise the external power supply is the best way.
