The 13 inch macbook pro with retina has no audio input jack as far as I can tell. Does the headphone jack double as an audio in jack also? If I were to buy a 1/4 inch to 1/8 inch converter and plug my guitar cord, into the converter, into the headphone jack would this work?

DONT ATTEMPT IT, its likely your guitar is sending out more amperage than the minijack on your Macbook can handle and you would end up with a bad repair issue.
Contact your guitar mfg. about output wattage and power on that jack, and then verify input power with Apple about same before experimenting on what is likely a $1500 'blow out' on your fine Macbook
I'll take your word for it. Thank you. That is the last thing I need. Do you happen to know if the headphone jack does double as a microphone jack though?

No, not in the Retina models.
MBPs with dedicated audio input jacks include the 15 and 17 inch, non-Retina models.

It works with Garageband, if that's what you want to do, or as simply a USB audio input for any other software you need.
