Q: A nasty thing called "install.mac" has hijacked my Safari address bar search...

Yesterday I started trying to install Internet Explorer and a thing called DJVu in order to download a washing machine manual (I know...) and now my Safari and Firefox have both been hijacked by 'Install.mac' which I believe is a Genieo product.  When I type a search into the address bar of either Safari or Firefox it automatically redirects to an Install.mac results page rather than Google.  I can't find any evidence of either install.mac or Genieo anywhere on my mac in order to uninstall it.  It seems to be hiding somewhere.  Has anyone had the same experience and managed to get rid of the unwelcome guest?

iMac (24-inch Early 2009), Mac OS X (10.7.5)

    Does anyone know how to stop this message from coming up?

     

    "Please run InstallMac compatibility test and updates for the upcoming Mac OSX. Click Next to proceed."

     

    It keeps coming up and also has an option ticked to set the search bar to searchmoose which I hear is another nightmare to remove. If I'm being blind and asking an already answered question, my bad!

    This sounds like some new behavior that a variant of Genieo (aka InstallMac) is exhibiting. I'm still unclear as to whether existing solutions will solve the problem or not. I'd be very interested in finding out anything you might know about what you might have downloaded, and from where, right before this problem started, so that I can locate and study it.

    I'm unsure of whether that will work with this latest variant, though. As soon as I locate a copy to study, I'll update if necessary.

    I experience this randomly as a popup:

    compatibilityTest.jpgshould I just hit cancel?  it reads like Apple-eze to me, so I have been just been minimizing and ignoring it.  Or is this a sign of malware? Running 10.11.1 and nothing newer I'm aware of yet.

    Note that the search engine name is different than in the previous post.

    Your question has nothing to do with the subject and there's a good chance that nobody else is monitoring this discussion.

     

    If you can't find the answer in these old discussions, then you need to start a new discussion with the correct subject in order to get the right folks attention to come and help you.  That's just the way this Forum works.

     

    That being said I would not even hit "Cancel" in case it doesn't work.  Just force quit your browser and restart it with the shift key held down to keep that site from opening again.

    I do apologize.  I was mistakenly replying to another post relevant to my question here. I was probably logged in on two separate computers at once and swapped accidentally.  And believe me, I know the rules, having used this forum for years, and usually find my questions answered, and my answers seldom questioned.

     

    That said, thanks for your suggestion.  Will try if problem appears again.
