Love Logic X but constant kernel panics...

I've used my i5 MBP since April 2010 without a single kernel panic. Current configuration: ML 10.8.4, 8 GB RAM.

Never a kernel panic running FCPX, Adobe CS6, Cubase 7, DP 8, or my primary DAW- Logic 9.1.8.

After installing Logic X, kernel panics occured within 2-3 minutes when switching screen sets, toggling open/close various editors, even in a new Empty project.

I've sent a Report to Apple each and every time. Resetting PRAM seemed to help: I could use Lx for 30-45 minutes before the next system crash.

Funny thing, I used Cubases 7 all evening yesterday without a single problem... Same with DP 8 this morning.

Anyone else experiencing constant kernel panics?

Thank you for offering! I've several more if you need to review them.

FYI, I turned off Blue Tooth about 15 minutes ago having read somewhere that that might contribute to kernal panics. No kernel panics yet.

Your graphic driver crashed, probably when switching between internal and dedicard graphics chip. Logic Pro X now seem to use OpenGL for accelated drawing, which might explain what it didn't occur in Cubase. You can try to disabled the "Automatic graphics switching" in the Energy Saver preferences and see if that fixes it.

Jul 21, 2013 7:52 AM in response to CC#11

Unfortunately, kernel panics are still occurring, less frequently but enough to make Logic X unusable on my 2010 i5 MBP 6,2 for anthing other then learning it's new features.

Replacing the mother board is out of the question. This Mac has been a stout, dependable performer up to this point, and will continue to be for other applications.

Any other thoughts or recommendations?

Pancenter,

Yes, the NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M.

Heat? Possibly, but it hasn't been issue to date.

I did install a second Seagate Momentus Hybrid hd via the OWC Data Doubler which has been running very smoothly over the past year during for prolonged periods of time each day, and during some hellaciously hot days.

So a logical action here would be to remove it and replace the optical burner to see if that decreases kernel panics.

I'll post back.

I very much doubt that would do anything to allieviate your problem. The optical bay is no the other side of the Mac to your GPU, and the Unibody means that thre is pretty much no chance of any component ther save for another GPU generating enough heat to affect components on the other side of the Mac. What I would suggest is that you get a laptop cooler, they work especially well on Macs due to the aluminium shell helping transport heat away from the hardware.

A MBP using the fans hard on a hot day means lots more air travels though your vents, leaving dust inside your machine, which is great at trapping heat. After a while your Mac will simply be unable to cope with the copius amounts of dust inside them when your GPU is stressed on hot days. I have seen this before with my girlfriends 2009 MBP rendering FCP... granted, her resets were down to the CPU overheating the MBP, the root cause was still dust, and before now there wasn't much that could stress a Mac's GPU to this level other than games.

Jul 21, 2013 11:22 AM in response to CC#11

The only reason I mentioned a possible heat problem is Mountain Lion using considerable GPU processing and the fact that the most recent Logic graphic routines may also hit the GPU pretty hard. An easy way to tell if it's heat related make sure the back end of the laptop is propped up an inch or two and use a small table fan blowing across/underneat the machine... if it's heat related your crashes should stop then at least you'll know.

I also know the nvidea chips run hot.

Jul 21, 2013 1:00 PM in response to Pancenter

Pancenter,

Thank you for pointing out heat as a trigger for kernel panics.

I removed the OWC Data Doubler with the second internal Seagate Momentus Hybrid hd, and put the optical drive back inside of the i5 MBP.

It's been around two hours now without a kernel panic. Also, I'm not kidding, my system seems more repsonsive as in the proverbial "snappier". And a touch of the hand on the bottom of the case indicates less heat which is by no means a scientific measure.

I will post back if this changes.

----

Rob,

For the past several days, at most, I've used a Yamaha/Steinberg eLicenser and the Fishman Triple Play USB wireless receiver. No external hd as my samples were on the second internal hd until today (now back in the OWC Mercury Mini enclosure).

Having said that, when initially exploring Logic X, only headphones were used, no peripherals. So I'm inclined to suspect the heat of the second internal hd was a factor.

Gen_

Thank you for suggesting a laptop cooler. Sad to say that I never realized they existed. That item is now on my short list.

Thanks to all for your suggestions.
