Kernel panic with time machine back-up

Since Thursday I have been getting a kernel panic every time I try and back up to my storage device with time machine. I have given the report below.

That error often indicates that the Time Machine drive's filesystem is damaged, so Time Machine can't back up to the drive and it crashes.

As you are backing up to an external drive, open Disk Utility (in /Applications/Utilities). Then, choose the Time Machine's partition of your external drive in the sidebar, and repair permissions and verify the disk. If it gives you an error, repair the drive. Can you repair the drive? If not, you may have to format the Time Machine drive

If you can't see it, the Time Machine drive is damaged. Buy a new external drive and set up Time Machine in it > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427

Probably. If you can, connect it directly to your iMac and follow the steps of my first comment to check if the hard drive is working correctly

I have connected directly through the ethernet cable and I can see the files but I just cant see it in disk utility.

Hard drives get damaged by the use. Time Machine makes hourly backups, and if you keep your hard drive doing that for years, the hard drive will get damaged at the end. This happens with all hard drives, not only the ones used by Time Machine, but this may happen earlier or later

Thanks for your suggestion. I managed to mount on, and then when I verified the disk it came up that the disk had corruption so then I repaired and to double check I verified it again and it was all solved. The backup is now succesfully up to date.
