The online support article states under additional information that Time Machine is not supported with USB hard drives that are connected to an AirPort Extreme device. My Setup guide for Airport Extreme states that it is supported, but when I connected the usb drive to the base station, it was not recognized by Time Machine. Which documentation is correct?

In fact, you can use an external drive connected to the USB port of an AirPort Extreme, but this only works in the new AirPort Extreme with 802.11ac.
