Can't seem to factory-reset Express or see it in Airport Utility

Hello --

I have a functioning Time Capsule network and am trying to get my Airport Express to join. I've tried to do a factory reset but I never get it to flash green four times; it just flashes amber for a long time then goes dark.

So it just ends up flashing amber and won't show up in the Airport Utilities list of visible devices.

Am I doing something wrong?

Many thanks for any advice/instruction!

There is nothing mentioned in this Apple Support document about an AirPort flashing green four times during a reset.

Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule FAQ

I've reset dozens of AirPorts, and have never once seen one flash green four times during the reset process.

To perform a Factory Default Reset on an AirPort Express......

Power off the AirPort Express

Wait a minute

Hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it in for an additional 9-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the AirPort Express back into power

Release the reset button after the 9-10 second hold period

Allow a full minute for the AirPort Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light

That's it.

Please check the model number of the AirPort Express on the side in the faint print. It will start with a letter "A" followed by four numbers, as in Axxxx. What model number do you see?

Are you still using OS X (10.6.8) as your profile states?

Click the AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen and look for a wireless network with a name like Apple Network xxxxxx. That is the signal that the Express is producing, so you must connect to that signal to be able to configure the Express. Otherwise, AirPort Utility will never "see" the Express.

You must log on to that network first.....no password is required.....then open AirPort Utility.

You may be asked to switch networks to configue the Express. Yes, you want to switch networks.

If you do not want to use wireless to set up the AirPort Express, temporarily connect an Ethernet cable from your Mac to the AirPort Expess, then open AirPort Utility. Once the Express is setup, you can disconnect the Ethernet cable.

Hi,

I just thought you should know that the instructions for resetting in the manual that comes with the Time Capsule (wireless AC version) and on the Apple website, and in their FAQ are incorrect.

They do not work.

To reset the device you have to unplug it, hold in the reset button, and while holding in the reset button, plug the device in.
