Q: Time Capsule Connection Setup Problem

I am trying to set up a 802.11n WiFi hard drive TIme Capsule.  Instructions say to power down and then power back up cable modem.  I do not have one.  My internet is fiber optic and all that comes into the house is two ethernet cables...one for tv and the other plugs directly into router, or in this case, the time capsule.  Anything I can do to get this internet working with the Time Capsule?

Thanks

Time Capsule, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

With a fiber optic connection you should not need to power down... like a cable modem.. indeed there is nothing there to power down.

Plug  the ethernet into the WAN port of the TC..

Power TC up and check that the TC is in DHCP + NAT mode in the airport utility.

Check that Internet is set to dhcp.

If you don't get internet then please post screen shot showing the IP address etc you get on the WAN interface. This can be wrong.. or with some cheap fiber suppliers is a private IP address.

I called Apple Support and the tech said that the 169 IP address is wrong and that since I do not have a modem I will have to call the internet provider and have them reset my signal and the TC should work.  Of course its Saturday night and no one is working.  Thanks for your post though.

Plug a computer directly into the lead from the fibre converter.. you might be able to power cycle that.. but I doubt it will make any difference. The 169 address means the TC has picked up no IP at all.

How does the authentication on your fiber work?? Most just use dhcp.. but there are some systems that use pppoe and the like.

What did you use before the TC?

I still have my NetGear Dual Band n Router.  I think with that I had to load it with a disc onto the old Widows PC in the room where the ethernet cable comes in from the outside.  I have a Mac Mini in my office and I can't tear it all down or I would give that a try.
