I don't want to pay for this, so....

I have a ipod and an Iphone. I have and audio book that I would like to transfer to my ipod. They're linked to the same account so I don't understand why I can't have them on both devices. Is by getting the itunes match the only way I can have put my audiobook onto my ipod. By the way I have a Iphone 4 and I ipod touch that has the camera in it so it's like 2 years old.
