time machine debacle

I recently had my MacBook Pro stolen. I have been given a newer MacBook Pro to use for my job. I had a terabyte drive installed professionally and then proceeded to install a time machine backup from my previous computer dated from January. When I rebooted after time machine I was taken to the log-in screen where I have been unable to enter my password. I had no password. If by some chance I did have a password it will not accept any that I would have used. I restarted the machine to try again and It now tries to load but take me to a blue screen eventually. I can start in safe mode and it takes me to the log-in screen but I still cannot log-in. Please help. I'm not sure which operating system I was running, I updated every time a new one came out. I get confused with the various lions and tigers. I don't remember which one came first, I just kept updating when available.

Hi, TM fails big time as a trustworty backup app.

You may have used TM to replace an with an OS that won''t run on a newer Mac.

Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.

If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.

Starts up like the first time you buy a new Mac, but after filling in all that info again, you should have access to the computer and the other Users & files will still be there... give the new User a different name than an existing one.
