I do a lot of cropping. So I know how to change from to landscape to portrait.
However, with this last batch of photos both landscape and portrait changes are grey and not an option.
The only difference is these photos are from photostream, they were downloaded from the camera to my ipad then opened in iphoto

to edit them you must first import them into iPhoto and then edit them in the resulting event
the landscape/portrait is a two step process - first select the constraints and then go back and select landscape or portrait

Right click on the photos in Photo Stream and select Import from the contextual menu:

I can crop them with any choice.. 4 x 6, 5 x 7 etc.
But the last 2 choices, landscape and portrait are greyed out
And yes, I have imported them
I get the process. I cannot understand what I have done to cause the landscape or portrait choice to be grayed out
After selecting the crop size click again on the constrain menu to get the activated landscape/portrait options.
I'm not near iPhoto right now - is there a 6x4 or 7x5 constraint? Or you can crop to 400x600 - cropping is a ratio not dimensions so that will work the same and should give you the landscape/portrait option when you return to constraints

SO... I tried it again, just what you said....AND IT WORKED!!!!!
It is now working just like it has for the past FIVE YEARS!!!!
I do not know how I had it greyed out. I guess now it doesn't matter.
I am just glad I made myself go over it again.
It was like magic.
