Are there still Verizon data plans that cancel automatically after one month?
I bought an iPad 2 on its "Day One" (March 11, 2011). One of the main reasons I bought an iPad was the advertised feature of monthly cellular data plans that could be activated for a month at a time, with your payment info remaining on file for easy reactivation. I was near the end of the line at the Apple store, so I ended up with a Verizon model. (The iPad is my only Verizon device.) Being retired and having wi-fi at home, I had no need for iPad cellular data except when traveling. On the few times I activated cellular data in 2011 and 2012, the plan terminated after one month as advertised. When I activated cellular data in May of this year however, the plan automatically renewed in June with no notice from Verizon. I noticed the reactivation only when I checked my credit card bill.
When I called Verizon a few days after the credit card charge, the phone rep told me that she had confirmed that I was still on a plan that would automatically cancel at the end of one month unless I took action to renew. I was told also that I'd be issued a credit for the second $20 they had charged me. When more than three weeks had passed without the $20 credit appearing, I again called Verizon. The phone rep this time told me that the only way to stop the automatic renewals will be for me to remove my credit card info from the iPad. He advised me that the only way for me to get the $20 back would be to file a "Disputed Charge" complaint with my credit card issuer. The only way to remove credit card info from my iPad was to cancel my account, which I did.
Looking now at Verizon's web site, I see that prepaid plans "automatically renew..." That information is dated 8/28/12, but I never received a plan change notice from either Verizon or Apple and I never received an email from Verizon when they automatically renewed me.
Has anyone else had my same problem? Would it be possible to switch my Verizon iPad to Sprint? (We have Sprint iPhones.) Thanks for any help or advice.
