Q: Is there a way to restore a corrupted iPhone backup file?

Is there a way to restore a corrupted iPhone backup file? I had to restore my phone, and I backed up the iphone with my computer on itunes. I restored the phone to factory settings, and then i clicked the "Restore Backup" button. After about 2 minutes, an error popped up that read "iTunes can't restore the backup because it was corrupt or is not compatible with the iphone being synced." I have an 8GB iPhone 4.

iPhone 4, iOS 6.1.3

I don't think it would be seen as corrupt if you could

If it's corrupted, then NO. If it's not corrupted, then YES. I'm sure you can find some tutorials for it if you look.

I'd like to add an update to this thread. There's been a lot more discussion about backups that iTunes reports as corrupted in this other thread (the thread title is iOS7 backups, but it's applicable to any corrupt backups.)

Re: iOS 7 update backup won't restore

In this thread, on pages 7 and 8, I introduced a tool that I had been working on to repair the corrupted iTunes backups (for any of iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch) and you can see a few people posting their success. We've had a lot of luck helping people repair the backups, and since it's posting, I've learned about many more backup errors and updated the software to include fixes

If you'd like to skip directly to our page about Decipher Backup Repair, you can go here:

(Note: As I mentioned above, this is software I work on. So, I stand to benefit, financially or otherwise, from the links I provided above.)

If you have Time Machine setup, you can use it to recover the backup with it. Then just restore the iPhone from backup as usual.

If you haven't setup Time Machine, you can try searching the web for backup extractors (not made by Apple). One of those Extractors may be able to recover some of the data from the backup, which you can just re-import and sync to the iPhone again.

but we like freeware sir, and whatever fix you offer is payware so there is that, and at thirty dollars it's not cheap but by no means its expensive either. I know there's gotta be someone here with the knowledge as to how to repair corrupt itunes backups for our beloved iphones
