You have to initiate the update in the settings. It does not happen automatically.

Settings>General>Software Update. You have to go through those steps and select the update if one is available.

iOS 5.1.1 suspiciously points to an iPad 1? If you have an iPad 1, 5.1.1 is as far as you can go.
