Leopard isn't available anymore at Apple, so you have to buy it at Amazon or eBay. Make sure you buy Leopard in the black and purple box, that means that is the retail box.
Then, make a backup of your files, insert the DVD and follow the steps to upgrade. After upgrading, open > Software Update, and install the most recent Mac OS X Leopard version.
Mac OS X 10.5.8 is the latest version for PowerPC-based Macs, so you can't upgrade to Snow Leopard or later. If you want to use a newer OS X version, buy a new Mac
Depends. If it has an 867 MHz or faster processor then you can upgrade to 10.5.8. You will need to look for a Leopard retail installer set on eBay or Amazon. They are no longer sold by Apple. Be sure you only purchase a retail set of discs. Do not buy OEM gray labeled products or so-called "universal" installers.
Thanks for your helpful reply. I did call Apple though and they said they will send me a disc to upgrade the operating system to 10.6.8 for $20 so I'm hoping that will solve my problem. I hope the rep was right.
Mac OS X 10.6.8 isn't compatible with your Mac. I told you to buy Leopard, not Snow Leopard, because Snow Leopard is only compatible with Intel-based Macs and you have a PowerPC-based Mac
