iTunes 11 copy/paste broken?

I've noticed in iTunes 11 that I am unable to create an empty playlist and use the %-v paste function to paste previously copied (%-c) selected tracks into the new playlist. This used to work in iTunes 10. Is this a iTunes 11 bug?

It works well for me with iTunes 11.0.4.

Which part of it does not work for you? The copy with cmd-C, or the paste with cmd-V? What happens, when you try? Do you get any error message?

You are creating a new, regular playlist and not a smart playlist, right?

What does the "Edit" menu in iTunes show? Is the "paste" command still bound to the cmd-V shortcut? Does copy and paste work, if you use the menu items instead of the shortcuts?

I see what your screenshot is showing, only when the copy did not succeed, that is, when I tried to copy items that cannot be copied, because they have not been downloaded from iCloud for example. What kind of tracks are you trying to copy? In the example below, I can paste the second song, but not the first.

The only irritating thing is, that the copy command does not give any error message. I see only from the grayed out "Paste" that the copy did not succeed.

I'm highlighting existing, tracks I've ripped from a CD. They are not protected. Once I've highlighted/selected a set of such tracks I press cmd-c. Then I create a new, normal playlist and at that point I am unable to paste either by pressing cmd-v or using the Edit->paste menu as it is greyed out. If I add a track by dragging it to the new playlist then if I click on the track in the new playlist then I can use paste to paste additional tracks into that playlist. Note also that if I click/select any normal playlist in the playlist view, paste is disabled. It is only enabled if I click on a track in some playlist.

Using iTunes copy/paste to update playlists is something that I've been doing for years and now in iTunes 11, it isn't working as I believe it should.

Here is a more detailed example. This next image I've selected a track in an existing playlist and the paste function is enabled (not greyed out):

In this next screenshot I've selected the playlist name itself and paste is disabled:

This is the change in paste support in iTunes 11 I object to. If you have a new playlist such that there aren't any tracks to select there is no way to use cmd-v/paste.

Yes understand what you are trying to say, but I am doing exactly that all the time. It is working for me in iTunes 11: Copy a few tracks with ⌘C, select a new, empty Playlist, paste it into the playlist. Only the paste has to be done immediately after copying; iTunes does not seem to keep the copied tracks in the pasteboard.

If this truely does not work for you, there must be something wrong with your iTunes library. Could you create a new iTunes library for testing? If it works with a different iTunes library, and this behaviour is bothering you, I'd rebuild the iTunes library.

I figured out the problem. I had the side bar view hidden and was using the playlists view with the Music library selected. When using this view one sees the behavior I described. If the side bar is visible then copy/paste to new playlists works as it does in iTunes 10. Thanks for trying to help -- the fact that it was working for you made me try more permutations which led to my figuring out what was wrong.

I still think it's a bug in iTunes 11 that in playlist view copy/paste doesn't behave the same as it does in side bar view. Less than consistent, yes?

True. That is a very surprising solution. I never thought of trying this with the sidebar hidden.

I am always showing the sidebar, when I am rearranging the library. It makes moving items so much easier - I prefer drag and drop to copy and paste.
