how do I get Apple Mobile device services to install?

I have a new brand iPhone 4 that I need to sync to iTunes for Windows (and by extension Microsoft Outlook 2007).

I downloaded and installed ITunes64Setup.exe several times today, but kept getting a series of error messages that prevented me from syncing the iPhone4 to my Windows 64-bit laptop (running Windows 7).

I received one error message "Service Apple Mobile Device failed to start (see image below), each time I re-installed iTunes64setup.exe.

When I attempt to sync the iphone, I get the message below : "the iphone cannot be used because the required software is not installed. Run the iTunes installer to remove iTunes, then install the 64-bit version of iTunes".

I have tried to install and run as administrator.

The iPhone 4 is my first Apple product. I am very unimpressed and VERY FRUSTRATED.
