computer won't start

Hi - I have a MacBook Pro 15", about 5 years old. It now won't start. Nothing at all, completely dead. I was downloading digital photos onto it at the time when it died half-way through. The camera memory card is fine (I've since tried it in another computer) but the computer is completely dead. The battery is fully charged up. Are there steps I should take before resorting to taking it to a store? Hope you can help. Thank you.

Hey Anth, I think you've cracked the problem. I had already thought about what you say and have left it plugged in and recharging all afternoon. It now works again and starts fine, but the power drains off very rapidly indeed - I can almost see the battery icon moving as I watch! I'll investigate a new battery, or perhaps I should treat myself to a new computer?! Thank you for your help. Thank you also Bee.
