ICal is not syncing across devices. How can I be sure it does?

I find sometimes when I have entered an appointment in my Macbook Air, it will not show up on my iPad or iPhone, or vice versa. This doesn't happen consistently, however. As far as I can tell, there are no hidden calendars operating. Suggestions?
