I have opened an apple account and now find 2 $1.00 charges on my credit card. There are no purchases. Is this normal?

if you just entered in a new credit card or changed the details on an existing one, the iTunes Store will place a small credit hold on your card to confirm that the card is valid. It is not a charge, just a hold, and your bank should release the hold in a few days. You may have two if you had to go back in and change any information. For details, see:
