Why do I receive messages sent to my wife"'s iPhone?

My wife and I each have an iPhone. Occasionally a message from a friend of hers will appear on my iPhone Messages. Sometimes the message doesn't go to her phone but just me. The senders must believe they are sending a message to her phone. I bought the phones at the same time. If a friend of hers receives a message accidentally from me it appears to be sent by my Apple ID. I would like it that messages I send to my friends don't end up on her phone and messages from her friends don't end up on mine. Thank you if you can help.

Because you are sharing apple IDs. You should have separate IDs for imessage, facetime and icloud. You then need to go to settings/messages each phone has the correct details entered in "you can be reached by imessage at"and "start new conversations from"

Thank you ckuan and ocean20. I have created a separate Apple ID for my wife. Still had the problem. Might have to ensure that Messages on her phone only has her Apple ID and phone number. On the way to fixing it we hope. Thanks.
