Problem Connecting Airport Extreme to Motorola SB6141

Hoping someone can help with this because I'm dumbfounded.

I have been using an Airport Exteme for a number of years with various Comcast rental modems. Today I purchased a Motorola SB6141, hoping to avoid the Comcast rental fees.

I work with Comcast and enable the new modem to connect directly to my Mac. After I'm off the phone, I connect the new modem to the Airport Extreme and a connection to the intermet couldn't be made. Strangely, it said that the Ethernet was unplugged, which it obviously was not. I switched out all of the wires, factory reset all of the airport settings, but no luck. Shut things down and started them up in every permutation imaginable. No connection between the Airport and the cabled modem.

I connected the modem back directly to the Mac and it worked perfectly.

I figured the WAN port was fried, but I decided to reconnect the old modem to the intermet and reconnected the Airport Extreme to that. Worked without any problem. Again reconnected the new modem to the internet and the Airport, again said that the Ethernet was unplugged.

So, I've got an Airport Extreme that doesn't register any ethernet connection when it is connected to a new Motorola SB 6141 modem, but works find when it is connected to an old Arris modem. But the new Motorola modem works just fine when connected directly to the PC.

Any ideas? I called Comcast, who were positive that this was not a problem with the modem.

I work with Comcast and enable the new modem to connect directly to my Mac.

So, now the modem has associated with your Mac.....and it will remember that connection and device....and look for it at all times.

After I'm off the phone, I connect the new modem to the Airport Extreme and a connection to the intermet couldn't be made.

The modem is still looking for your Mac because it associated with the Mac, and when it does not see it connected, it refuses to issue a valid IP address to the AirPort Extreme.

I connected the modem back directly to the Mac and it worked perfectly.

Clearly, the modem is still remembering your Mac. it will not look at another device.

So, the trick is to make your modem "forget" the Mac.....so that it can become acquainted with the AirPort Extreme.

Push the reset button on the modem....if present....and then power it off by pulling the power cable from the back of the modem or from the wall socket.

Leave the modem off for at least 30 minutes.

Now you will need to perform a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Exteme. Proceed as follows:

Pull the power cord from the back of the AirPort Extreme

Wait a few minutes

Hold in the reset button first, and continue to hold it in for 9-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back into the back of the AirPort Extreme.

Release the reset button after the hold period and allow a full minute for the Airport Extreme to restart

Power off the AirPort Extreme again

After the wait period for the modem, connect the Ethernet cable from the modem to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Exteme

Power up the modem and let it run for 5 minutes by itself

Power up the AirPort Extreme and let it run for a few minutes, and then set it up again. You can use the same device name, wireless network name, passwords, etc that you used before if you wish.

Post back on your results

If the AirPort Extreme still won't work with the modem, then you will need to reset the modem again before you attempt to connect it to your Mac.

Looks like the AirPort is just not going to talk to the Motorola modem, or vice versa. Very strange. Could be a compatibility issue.

As a last ditch effort, call Comcast and ask them if they need the MAC Address of the AirPort Extreme to allow it to connect to their service. The MAC Address is also known as the Ethernet ID, which should be on the bottom of the AirPort.

If that's not it, then you will have to try another make and model of modem, or another router.

I had the same problem. Time Warner Cable was of zero help. The SB6141 does not work with the Airport Extreme and at the moment the CMD31T by Netgear will not connect to their network (do not even bother calling technical support if it does not work). Here is my adventure with insanity.

After a call to the office of president at TimeWarner, they installed a Ubee modem and it works like a charm...

I'm also having a hard time getting the NEW Apple Airport Extreme to link up with my SB6141, via Time Warner Cable.

Were you able to just walk into Time Warner and ask them for a replacement? Or did you have to go through a walk around? I just want to know so I can not waste time having them give me a non compatible modem.

Having the same problem but with the NEW Airport Extreme and my SB6141. Inexplicably, the AE stopped connecting to the internet working after flawlessly working over the entire summer to present. The AE was broadcasting just fine and I could connect to it via wifi without issue. Unfortunately the AE wouldn't connect to the Internet! I could connect my Macbook directly to the cable modem and it worked just fine.

I used the Airport Utility and verified the no-connectivity between the AE and the internet.

I've tried all of the above proposed solutions in this and other threads (resetting the modem, resetting the AE, making sure that they are off for awhile), and am ripping my hair out as they haven't worked for me. It's Thanksgiving, so I can't just run out to any store and purchase a cheapo wifi to shut me up for awhile (or even a new AE).

In the interim, we've been tethering our iPhones and using that.

BTW, I have Comcast, and have never had problems with them. Knock on wood.

I'm thinking about buying either a new AE (sell the initial one) or a new modem (again, sell the initial one).

Any recommendations are welcome, but I feel like I've exhausted the possibilities. I've seen people mention that AE only supports up to IPV4 where as the SB6141 supports IPV6. Wondering if there is just a "talking" conflict between the devices because of that. I just feel like I shouldn't have to do detailed configs for the AE when it worked for awhile and straight out of the box.

What keeps happening to my Mac Mini seems related to this, but different. I have Time Warner, a Motorola SB5101U modem, an Airport Extreme which was the newest version in March 2013. Both my iPad and iPhone get email and internet access through this set up just fine.

The Mac Mini, on the other hand, since the 10.9.2 upgrade last fall has had a variety of problems with accessing the internet after a period of "sleep". Most often the Connection Doctor will report it has internet access, yet all email accounts will show red LEDs. And Safari will not load. Sometimes the problems will be corrected after 10 or 15 minutes. Sometimes re-entering passwords will fix it, but not always. And that, of course, gets tiresome.

If I get impatient and switch to my Verizon JetPack I will have instant access to the internet and email.

Since the two devices have good connectivity with the modem/airport set up I do believe the source must be in the computer's connectivity. I've had multiple conversations with Apple Support over the past 4 months. They try hard and seem to want to help, but have thus far had no solution which explains or fixes the problem. They did suggest totally erasing the OS and re-installing it, which seems a sledgehammer approach.

I don't spend much time here on these discussion groups, so if there's some other location I should take this problem in searching for answers, please tell me!

Just hooked up with TWC having dumped Verizon. last week, using the newest Motorola SB6141, white model for high speed. My service is 30 over 5. My older Airport Extreme A1143, works fine with my Imac connection. The problem is, I keep losing my wireless devices…Black Macbook, IPad2, ATV2. The devices, not all at the same time do connect. If I reboot the modem, then I lose the connection with the other devices unless they are on. If off, then when I turn them back on, I lose at least one of them as I boot them up. What is the proper settings on the router for TWC. They say it should be DHCP not the default of Off(BridgeMode). But if I attempt to do that it says I have more than one DNS and yes I show two, and that it has to be set up with one DNS. Any help appreciated.
