Spell Check Has Disappeared From Microsoft Word After Update?

It's in System Preferences:

Click onto the Apple top left- Go to - Personal then click - Language and Text

after update I lost my spell check in microsoft word - I don't have the personal option when I click on Apple top left.

I had the same problem. If you look down at the bottom of the window you will see a little book with either a red x (if there are spelling/grammar errors) or a green check (if there are no errors). Click on this icon and it will allow you to run the spell check.

I noticed this issue today when I wanted to add another langauge to my spell checker that I don't have a tool bar! So did anyone find a solution?

the red x works, but its just for individual checks. I had this happen to me too. I just use the hotkey for spell check. fn+F7

That works well Mikelowe6, thanks...Now what about grammer check?

This is really frustrating and annoying. One of the main functions of word, is rendered ineffective by some update. I've tried some the above recommendations, to no avail. Any solutions to get it back to where it was?

Hi, I have the same problem. Updated and POOF! spell check gone. None of the above has helped me. None of the fixes are available to me. No "personal' in system preferences, and no little book in the bottom. Please help. -D

This same thing happen to me and I tried everything this page suggested and it did not work. I opened a new document and copied my work over and it didn't work. So I opened a new word document and just typed random letter and tested if the red line would come under it. It did! So I just retyped my words into that document. Thank god I caught it early or else I would be re-writing a 2000 word essay!

Try and start a new word document, make sure you don't copy and paste the information though just retype it again manually. (hopefully you don't have too much to type!)

I've tried all of the suggestions on this thread and nothing has helped. I'm running a late 2013 MacBook Pro, El Capitan version 10.11.3. Microsoft Word for Mac 2011 Update 14.6.2. Word's Toolbox informs me that "English (US) proofing tools are not installed."

I noted this problem several versions/updates ago and I've kept thinking that someone at Microsoft would finally diagnose the problem and correct it, but that has not happened.

Word's Preferences pane shows that the Spelling and Grammar tools icon is dimmed out and simply won't open.

I really would like to have this feature back as I am a long-time Word user and don't want to be pushed away from it because of this problem.

Any help would be deeply appreciated.
