Purchased Apple TV From Someone Without Remote

The device works, when I turn it on when connected to ethernet it goes right to the screen with netflix, settings, computers. I do not have a remote to it. I plug it in through ethernet and downloaded the remote app and opened home sharing. but the apple tv icon is not showing up on my iphone, it's not pairing. I believe it's because the device has already been paired and used by someone else. Does anyone know what I can do or do I have to go out and buy a remote and reset the unit?

I've tried shutting the device off many times thinking it would reset it, but it's not doing anything. It wont connect to wifi because it's not paired to my wifi obviously.
